66.33°N — Stories from an Invisible Line
I am travelling gradually around the Arctic Circle, following the latitude of approximately 66.33°N. Moving by public transport and staying with local people along the way, I aim to document the stories, rhythms, and realities of life lived above this invisible line. The environments I encounter range from remote and extreme to unexpectedly urban, each shaped by its own relationship to climate, culture, and globalisation.
My focus is on uncovering a female narrative within these landscapes — voices and experiences that are often overlooked in mainstream accounts of the Arctic. Through conversations, observation and analogue photography, I hope to understand how women navigate change in a region where the effects of human activity, climate shifts, and tourism are felt with particular intensity.
The choice of location stems from a personal fascination with the significance of an “invisible line”: a boundary that exists only on maps, yet cuts across vast terrains and diverse cultures. The Arctic Circle is both a geographical marker and a symbolic threshold — a place where the fragility of the planet becomes visible, and where traditional ways of life display global pressures.
I am using mostly traditional photographic methods throughout this journey. Working with film slows the process, encourages deeper engagement with the people I meet, and restores a sense of intention to each frame.
The project will also involve darkroom work, re-establishing traditional analogue skills. The final exhibition will consist of 66.33 images, echoing the latitude itself. Together, they will form a visual narrative of how life along this line has evolved — and how adaptation, resilience, and cultural identity continue to shape the Arctic’s future.
